I don't understand how a child can be terrified of some things, (bugs, alligators, hills, swimming pools) yet be so fearless about other things.

Of course she gets that paradoxical behavior from her Father. You know from tales of his past exploits (motorcycle driven into the lake, falling - or jumping - of this or that high precipice, car stunts of all kind, etc, etc.) is in rather sharp contrast to - hmmm - say his life-long fear of spiders, for instance (and he can CLAIM he's over that just because now he can actually kill one, but when he was little he WOULD NOT GO INTO THE SAME ROOM AS A BUG/SPIDER).
